Where you go

  1. Barcelona, Spain

    June 27 – July 4

We play two sanctioned tournaments this first week, both counting for your UTR: a satellite singles and an age-group junior singles (14-16-18) in a suburb of Barcelona — very challenging competition in one of the top tennis countries in the world, with the bonus of practicing your Spanish all week. Our base is Castelldefels, a scenic seaside resort 20 minutes south of Barcelona; our 3-star hotel is a short walk from the Canal Olimpic water center, built for the 1992 Olympics. At the end of the week we spend a day in Barcelona — Gaudí's La Sagrada Familia, the Ramblas, the Old City with its Gothic cathedral and Roman ruins, the harbor and the Gran Via. This world-class city is a perfect way to finish our days in Spain.

  2. Prague, Czech Republic

    July 4 (evening) – July 11

Next, we fly to Prague, one of the most popular European destinations — a city of red rooftops and golden spires, and a youthful city, home to many semester-abroad high school and college students. We play two Czech Tennis Federation tournaments, each with under-18 singles and doubles (or under-14, or men's and ladies') counting toward your UTR. Plenty of match play against red claycourt specialists. We house at either a 3.5 to 4 star hotel or apartment suites, a short walk or ride from the Oaza Tennis Club where we practice. We spend a day downtown visiting Prague Castle, the Old Town Square, the medieval Charles Bridge and the Old Jewish Quarter, including Europe's oldest synagogue and cemetery.

  3. Leiden, Holland — or Germany

    July 11 – July 19

Our final tournament will be in either Holland or Germany — once we receive the Dutch and German schedules, we decide which. Holland: we have played the Leiden Open for over ten summers. It features one singles and one doubles per player, with draws by ability level rather than age. Leiden is a city of canals about 35 minutes from Amsterdam; we house at the 4-star Hotel Sassenheim, famous for its breakfast buffet, visit The Hague and, if time permits, Rotterdam, and finish with Amsterdam's Anne Frank House and Rijksmuseum. Germany: German tournaments are generally three or four days long, so we would play in two locations, each with one age-group singles — near Frankfurt or Berlin, followed either by the ETV Jugend Cup in Hamburg, where we have played for many years, or by Waiblingen, a major European junior singles tournament near Stuttgart, home of the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche Museums.

Short-trip players fly home from Prague on Sunday July 11. The full team flies home from Amsterdam or Germany on Monday July 19. The team departs from New York (JFK) on Saturday June 26.
