Summer 2027
Alps to Rome Team
The Alps, then Bergamo, Florence and the Eternal City.
- Dates
- June 26 – July 14, 2027 · 19 days
- Countries
- Switzerland or Austria · Italy
- Who it's for
- A mixed-ability team. Sanctioned tournaments in the Alps, then friendly matches against Italian clubs — Italian federation rules keep foreign juniors out of their junior tournaments, so we play the clubs instead: singles and doubles, no elimination, scored USA against Italy.
Where you go
Bern & Biel, Switzerland — or Vienna / Innsbruck, Austria
June 27 – July 4
Switzerland: we begin with practice days and friendly matches at the Swiss Tennis Academy in Biel, arranged by a past Tennis: Europe coach now working for the Swiss Tennis Federation. Biel sits on Lake Biel, with scenic hiking trails; we tour the Omega Watch Museum and the Maison Cailler chocolate factory, where we try our own hand at chocolate-making. We then enter a weekend tournament in nearby Bern, the capital, with singles and a consolation singles by ability level, and see the Old Town, the medieval clock tower, Parliament House, the Rosengarten and the famous Bear Pits. Austria: the President of the Austrian Tennis Federation is a long-time personal friend of Dr. Vinokur, and will recommend a week of tournaments for the team. We will know in the spring, and then choose between Switzerland and Austria for our first week.
Bergamo, Italy
July 4 (evening) – July 8
Thirty-five minutes from Milan. We recently met our host Tennis Director there, who is assembling players from his own club of 300–400 juniors, along with other Italian teenagers from across the area — both for friendly matches and for a two or three day tournament. Bergamo is one of the hidden gems of northern Italy: we see La Città Alta, the Old City on the hill, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Piazza Vecchia, and plan a visit to Milan, home of da Vinci's “Last Supper” and the spectacular Milan Cathedral.
Florence, Italy
July 9 – July 11
A short train ride away is Florence, the home of the Renaissance, with friendly matches at a prominent tennis club we have played at for many summers — the red claycourt matches are challenging and usually close, and we often take our lunches by the club pool. We visit Michelangelo's David at the Accademia, the Duomo and the Baptistery doors. Our housing is a 3 or 4 star apartment or hotel in the heart of the city, a great shopping town for designer clothing and leather goods.
Rome, Italy
July 11 – July 14
We finish in the Eternal City, with matches at one and possibly two tennis clubs — singles and doubles. Beyond the tennis, there is time to socialize with the Italian teenagers we play. We visit the Roman Forum, the Colosseum and the Vatican, including St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Rome is for walking, so we stay at a centrally located hotel near several piazzas, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain.
We fly back to the USA from Rome on Wednesday July 14.
