The New England Down East Team 2018
What could be more scenic and beautiful than New England during the summer vacation season? This team will play 5 USTA Level 6 and 7 USTA tournaments in four northern New England States…Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. This is a great way to cap off your summer holidays and prepare for the fall tennis and school season. And for those with limited tournament experience, we can jump start your match playing career.
FIRST LOCATION: CONCORD, MASS. , July 6 – July 8
This Level 7 tournament has both age group singles and doubles. We will practice for a day to prepare for the tournament. We also will spend a half day in Boston, just a few miles away. Concord is also known as the home of the 19th century literary renaissance, led by Ralph Waldo Emerson, for its role at the start of the Revolutionary War and for the Concord Museum and its early American history artifacts, including Paul Revere’s lantern from his famous ride. Boston features the Freedom Trail, Old North Church, Faneuil Hall and Marketplace, Boston Common and the Red Sox.
SECOND LOCATION: PORTLAND, MAINE, July 10 – July 12
Maine Racquet & Fitness Center will host this Level 6 singles tournament with age group singles. Portland is Maine’s Cultural capital, home to many fine restaurants and a short ride away from major beach resorts like Old Orchard Beach and Ogunquit. Home to Longfellow, Portland also features a significant art museum and Victoria Mansion.
THIRD AND FOURTH LOCATIONS: NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, July 13 – July 15 and July 17 – July 19
We next drive to Nashua, New Hampshire where we play two tournaments at the Swim & Tennis Club which has 8 indoor and 8 outdoor courts and also hosts its own tennis academy. The first tournament, Level 7 singles and doubles, is from July 13-15, followed two days later by a Level 6 clay court singles event.
Nashua is New Hampshire’s second largest city, with scenic Mine Falls Park for boating, walking and fishing. We also will have an optional trip to “Sky Ventures”, which features indoor surfing, boogie boarding and a vertical wind tunnel.
FIFTH LOCATION: STRATTON, VERMONT, July 20 – July 22
The Green Mountains of Vermont provides our final setting for our trip with friendly matches or a tournament at a prominent tennis academy which has a red clay court surface. This location is in the heart of the ski country of Vermont, with hiking and other outdoor opportunities. Last summer they had an under 16 singles tournament; we may also play a friendly match with some of the Academy participants. NOTE: Alternately, we may choose to participate in a two day Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) tournament in Waltham, Mass. This tournament draw is determined by ability level, not by age or sex, and is becoming the major rating system used by college tennis coaches to evaluate recruits.
